Power:
Our crews have continued to work throughout the night with CL&P trying to open up the remaining 18 roads that were closed due to trees and wires down. We have succeeded in most but still have 5 or 6 roads that remain closed. Re-opening roads continues to be our top priority with our CL&P crews this morning. we have had a dedicated CL&P liaison since yesterday at 1:00p and a dedicated crew since 5:00p yesterday.
We are hoping to begin restoration this afternoon but don't have any CL&P crews dedicated to that effort at this time. We will keep you posted on the restoration of power as information becomes available.
Schools:
Dr. Erardi has decided that schools will remain closed until Wednesday at which time we will assess whether
or not it is prudent to re-open for the remainder of the week. Currently 10 of 12 schools are without power.
Shelters:
CERT teams with the support of Town staff are operating the Calendar House 24/7 and will continue to do so as long as necessary. We have had participation as high as 40 residents, and Calendar House has capacity for up to 120. Should the weather continue to deteriorate and the need arises, we are preparing plans for a backup shelter at this time.
The two Warming Centers and cell phone recharging centers continue to be the Calendar House (24hours a day) and the Library (from 9:00a-9:00p). Both are set up to support our residents.
Showers:
The YMCA has generously offered their facility as place for residents to take a shower; members and non members, and will continue to do so as long as needed. If they become overwhelmed, we are preparing for a backup shower point at one of the middle schools the location of which is to be determined.
Food and fuel:
All of our grocery stores are open and food is available. Most of our gas stations are open and have fuel. However, there are significant lines at most gas stations and we are encouraging patience.
Recovery:
Leaf Pickup has been delayed for a week and will commence on Monday, November 7. That schedule will now impact all of the zones going forward as the entire process will be delayed a week.
Bulky Waste Transfer Station is open for brush only beginning Tuesday at 8:00 am and will run through Saturday for residents to be able to dispose of their brush. Later this week we will assess the need to bring state contractors in to assist in brush removal; however, this will be at town expense and may be reimbursable. If we can avoid this we will, but if it is necessary to recovery we will make sure that we get brush removal.
Safety:
Please remind all drivers that we have several traffic lights that are not functioning. Handle every traffic light that is not working as a 4-way stop.
The weather appears to be in our favor as the days should warm up into the high 40s and low 50s and the nights in the low to mid 30s. We are hoping that the snow will be gone by Thursday.
Halloween: We recognize that the conditions are not conducive to a safe Halloween and are recommending that parents not take their kids out tonight. However, it is not a town holiday and the decision on whether or not children trick or treat is up to the parent.
There is a State conference call at noon today and a staff meeting at 1:00 pm. I will try to provide an update after that time.
